The most relevant authors and theories that I will briefly explore are Henry P. I will take a stand that supports the view that some form of quantum theory may facilitate our understanding of consciousness, mind, soul, and spiritual values-based decision-making. Let us begin by extending these areas to cognitive science, systems neuroscience, non-linear system dynamics, mathematics, and classical and quantum physics. In the paper titled “Quantum Measurement, Consciousness and the Soul: A New, Alternative Position” by Werbos, 2018a, he concludes about the problem of quantum measurement: “All of this physics does not tell us much about consciousness or the soul…” and he suggests that the answers may be found in other areas of science, like neuroscience and neural networks for example. If it is ever possible to build a device endowed with consciousness, it must possess unpredictability of behavior, infidelity, and inalienable freedom and must be called Spartacus. These features of neural dynamics are discussed within the framework of the dissipative quantum model of the brain and with reference to AI systems and research programs.
On the contrary, brains appear to proceed by steps that do not necessarily belong to a strictly predictive chain of steps, but behave like a ‘machine making mistakes’, intrinsic erratic devices. These observations support the remark, attributed to Aristotle, that the brain is not a stupid star, which in its perennial trajectory passes always through the same point in a fully predictable way.
Freeman has stressed the role played by chaos underlying the ability of the brain to respond flexibly to the outside world. However, all behavior seems to be determined by masses of excitations, within general fields of activity, without reference to particular nerve cells. As observed by Lashley, nerve impulses are transmitted from cell to cell through defined cell connections.
The activity of the neocortex presents the formation of extended configurations of oscillatory motions modulated in amplitude and phase and involving myriads of neurons.
